This intricately structured plot starts in 1932 where 10-year-old Max is awoken by an airplane. He doesn't suspect that his encounter with the pilot will not only open the beauties of the world to him but follow him from World War II to the jails of Pinochet's Chile. Neither does he realise that a book will prove to be the missing link between him and the pilot.
Flitting back and forth across several timeframes and settings - most notably Chile of 1932 and 1973, and the UK during World War II - Ruiz demonstrates his skills as a masterful storyteller whose narrative unfolds as a pleasurable slowburn. As a political exile of Chile himself, Ruiz fashions a film that is both telling and personal.
