Rejecting an offer to be embedded as a filmmaker in Iraq, Deborah Scranton instead equipped US soldiers with cameras and let them shoot their Iraq tour of duty. The result is The War Tapes. Edited down from over one thousand hours of footage, the doco follows the daily lives of three soldiers in the deadly ‘Sunni Triangle' - with bomb attacks, street battles and the devastation of the war viewed at point-blank range. More than a unique soldiers' view, The War Tapes is an exploration of the soldier mentality. In the absence of a filmmaker or journalist, they discuss things with a rarely seen candour. The cameras also follow the soldiers home again where they struggle to re-adjust to civilian life and make sense of the chaos in Iraq. Winner of Best Documentary at Tribeca Film Festival.
