Writer Cai Shangjun (Sunflower, MIFF 06) makes his directorial debut with The Red Awn, an honest portrayal of teen rebellion, coming-of-age and the rebuilding of a father-son relationship.
After many years in the city, Soonghai returns to his village to find his wife dead and his son, Yongtao, bitter with resentment.
Understated performances subtly express the emotions at play, with gestures conveying more than words. The film unfolds with the gentle rhythms of its pastoral setting, as father and son take tentative steps to a reconciliation.
