We may forget the past, but the past won't forget us.

Director Art Folman's animated documentary was surprisingly passed over for a prize in this year's Cannes competition; for many viewers the audacity and boldness of its cinematic vision marked it as a standout title. The subject matter is repressed memory - specifically, the memories of Folman and his friends' involvement as soldiers in the Israeli war against Lebanon in 1982.

Using flash-animation, hand-drawn techniques and computer-enhanced 3D modelling, Folman's work of art is one of this year's highlights.

“Transmuted via novel use of animation into something special, strange and peculiarly potent.” - Variety
