IDIOTS AND ANGELS (2008) [feature]

USA (MIFF 2008 , Animation Gallery)
Director: Bill Plympton

Festival favourite and dependably inventive animator Bill Plympton (Mutant Aliens, MIFF 2002) has produced a neat and nasty moral opus.

In a bleak urban world of cars, bars and burbs, a cruel and selfish man makes an unpleasant discovery; he is growing wings. These irremovable appendages confound and irritate him, and threaten to interfere with his morally moribund lifestyle. That is, until he discovers he can fly. This mischievous modern parable is rendered with a vigorous pen and Plympton's characteristic exaggerated perspectives and flights of rubbery fancy. A sophisticated film that complicates the dualism of its premise and drags us down into the dark night of our own souls - and what better music to find there than Tom Waits and Pink Martini. You won't like this guy any more that his wings do. --- D/S Bill Plympton P Biljana Labovic WS Branscome International L no dialogue TD digibeta/2008/78mins
