24 CITY (2008) [feature]

China (MIFF 2008 , Neighbourhood Watch)
Director: Zhang Ke Jia

"Mr. Jia is working at the border where fiction and nonfiction meet, which is where this fantastically surreal country itself seems to exist." - New York Times

For six decades Factory 420 in Sichuan China has been more than just an aeronautics factory - it has been a self-contained town of its own, with living quarters, cinemas, sports facilities and even a school. Now it's being torn down to make way for an apartment complex called 24 City, and for the workers past and present it is the end of an era.

Comfortably marrying documentary and fiction, 24 City features real life interviews with workers from Factory 420 seamlessly entwined with the work of the actors.

Filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke's documentary Useless is also screening in this year's program.
