In the chaos of post-apartheid South Africa, one group of women work tirelessly to better the lives of those most in need.

Fearless, feisty and resolute, the 'Rough Aunties' are a remarkable group of women, unwavering in their stand to protect and care for the abused, neglected and forgotten children of Durban, South Africa. They wage a daily battle against systemic apathy, corruption and greed to help the most vulnerable and disenfranchised in their communities.

Rough Aunties is an intimate portrait of change in post-apartheid South Africa, a nation being transformed with hope and energy into a new democracy, as seen through the lens of acclaimed filmmaker Kim Longinotto (Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go, MIFF 08; Sisters in Law, MIFF 05).

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival 2009.
