On the borders of Poland and Czechoslovakia stand the great Tatra Mountains. Here live the Men of the Blue Cross, the mountain rescue teams. Their headquarters are in Zakopane, capital of the Tatras.

Here in February, 1945, comes a Slovak doctor seeking the help of the rescue teams for members of a partisan band who lie sick and injured in Slovak territory, still in enemy hands.

The rescue team hesitates. Even the most experienced of guides would not risk the mountain crossing in this season. The doctor insists. He tells them about his patients, his young nurse… his stocks of medicine are running low, he has to amputate without anaesthetics…

The great adventure begins. The men of the Blue Cross brave the peaks, abysses and avalanches. Penetrating into enemy territory at the risk of their lives, they bring the wounded to safety.

This true story was filmed on the locations where the actual events occurred. Most of the parts are played by members of the Blue Cross rescue team, reenacting their own roles in the heroic story.
