Born from the frustrating experiences of two theology students, the film describes the problems of a modern rural clergyman trying to keep a grip on a dwindling congregation, while examining the relevance of his personal role in modern life.

Realising that the Orthodox Church is dying, and that in most people's eyes he is a mere functionary, the parson attempts to make the Church relevant to today's world and identify it with universal problems. In his efforts to interest himself and his parishioners in the state of the Christian religion, the pastor stages a production of Munk's, "The World", only to find himself competing for an audience with the more basic appeal of a wandering faith healer.
