LIVING JAZZ

A sober, factual study of the working lives of the members of Bruce Turner's Jump Band, a small group of professional jazz musicians. The film opens at the end of a dance at their base above a London pub; the musicians disperse as respectably as civil servants leaving Whitehall at five o'clock. Next morning they are seen practising — serious, dedicated artists — before setting off by car, through rain washed subtopia, to fulfil their next engagement. The direction and camerawork give a feeling of intimate participation in their work which demands a certain dedication if standards are to be maintained, and in a routine which involves a good deal of monotonous journeying.
