Irene is a woman who doesn't quite know what she wants to do. She is married with an attractive child, but also has, a lover, Ebbe. He is deeply in love with her, but their relationship is not a happy one. Sexually she is not attracted to him, and her general dissatisfaction leads her into short and sometimes bizarre affairs with other men and women. The film looks at frustrations, both on a private and a political level. At the beginning of the film, Ebbe is fired from his job as a journalist because of his political views. Irene, too, is in constant trouble at her job as a public relations secretary for a film distributor, as she does not wish to prostitute her talents.

Both Irene and Ebbe are in a way excluded from society. They have nowhere to go, have no positive relations with other people. Most people they meet have been destroyed by loneliness, and are victims of a society lacking in human communication.

Ebbe and Irene seem to be the next victims.
