Vittorio Borghi, a 40-year-old reporter and ex-communist, now works for an independent newspaper. He has lost all the idealism of his youth and the world seems to be falling apart around him. He goes away from Rome, leaving behind him a broken marriage, a ten-year-old child and a young mistress. He drives almost unconsciously towards the small town where he was born . . .

The Seasons of our Love is Vancini's fourth film. Born in 1925, he made his debut in 1960 with La lunga notte del '43. This new film of his is a love story: it is not only about love for a woman, but in a wider sense, love of life, of humanity, the capability of giving all of oneself to something. The originality of the script is in the use of the "flashback" which becomes part of the story and is a continuous and sad call of the past. Nostalgic thoughts play a quiet counterpoint to the present. Full of episodes and characters, The Seasons of our Love gives a broad view of life and deals with feelings common to all men.
