The film covers the period from 1941 to 1944. the beginning to the end of the war in Yugoslavia. It consists of three stories from the experiences of the revolutionary Milos. In the first, set in 1941, a group of people accuse a man of being a traitor: in the second, Milos, accompanied by a wounded partisan, tries to pass through the German lines: and in the third, Milos has seen the end of the war and is appointed judge.

Three is only superficially a war film. Its real concern is the relation of man to death. In the first of the three interconnected episodes, the hero is witness to a senseless killing: later, as a soldier, he learns the fear of the fugitive: finally, he must himself turn killer, in meting out death to collaborators.

Devoid of rhetoric and contrivance, the strength of the film largely relies on the performance of Bata Zivoginovic who appears as Milos.
