The story of a little boy whose father dies on the last day of the War. The lonely and timid child needs a prop and finds support in creating a myth about his father's memory, inventing images of a partisan hero, a great surgeon, a political leader, while his father's former possessions acquire the potency of santly relics. He grows up into the bewildering times of the fifties and the myths desert him. At last he stands on his own...

The poitiayal of adolescence and the problems that arise during youth are popular themes with the new generation of Hungarian film directors. Father is the second film by István Szabó, the talented director of The Age of Daydreaming. It balances psychological observation and ironic social commentary in a story which is told with great speed, originality and understanding.
