A film about African women in the bush and the city, struggling to carve out a place for themselves in a changing world. Two distinct stories are linked with each other by the device of a "Greek chorus" who sing and dance their way through the plot. In the first story, N'Guessan. a young woman goaded by her husband's groundless jealousy, is spurred into starting an affair with her brother-in-law. In the second story. Bernadette, a middle-aged woman who owns a fish vending business that finances her family and village, rebels when she discovers she has no personal assets upon which to raise a bank loan.
