A central aspect of Tom Phillip's approach to painting is a concern for process, reflected not only in the structure of individual paintings, but in a meticulous documentation of the development of each work.
This film is true to the spirit of that concern in its overall shape and the way paintings are shown. Commentary throughout the film is provided by the artist and some of his music is used on the soundtrack. The interaction between the artist's work and its representation on film is at its most direct in the final sequence.
A wall-size improvisatory drawing was followed by stop-frame photography over a period of 3 months as it developed and transformed, before being gradually, but completely erased. All that was left was the paper, a pile of dust and the film. The work now consists of Tom Phillips projecting the film
back onto the paper it was filmed from.
