"Germans have many problems. One of them is that they don't like German films and my film is considered German", writes Icelandic director Margret Run.

Hermann has a problem, he is extremely shy and has an Oedipus complex. He punishes himself for sinful thoughts by inflicting himself with burns. He joins the Salvation Army in search of solace but is too painfully shy to speak of his problems. After more self torment Hermann finds hope.

Shown at Munich Film Festival in '89, the film received a controversial response, causing an uproar in the cinema between supporters and detractors.
