In Sonatine writer/director/editor/star 'Beat' Takeshi consolidates his position as the most original, idiosyncratic and poetic exponent of the gangster film working anywhere in the world today. After the wistful Scene at the Sea, the ironically titled Sonatine returns — with a vengeance — to the terrain of his earlier Violent Cop and Boiling Point (all seen at MFF '92). Takeshi plays Murakawa, a ruthless and seriously jaded yakuza. The plot is as simple as Ten Green Bottles. Murakawa is persuaded to take his men to Okinawa to intervene in a gang war. One by one, the gang freak out, abscond or die violent deaths until only the coolest remain.
