Alzheimers has almost become an 'OK' disease to joke about, being quite fondly referred to and demonstrated by 'dotty' TV relatives (Mother and Son, Absolutely Fabulous). Schatzman uses the quality of forgetfulness as a more sombre tool in his caustic political view of the United States' progress from the sixties to the present. Symbolic and historic 60s footage (People's Park, Kent State elc) and music entwine with more recent events (Rodney King, the Gulf War) to remind us that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
