An extraordinarily visually inventive tale of ghosts and greed, Mr George follows the 'efforts of a trio of middle-aged parasites to rid themselves of the little-girl heiress left in their charge. The hour-long format allows Lupino to explore the nature of the relatives' self-delusional concupiscence in far more detail than she was able to accord the equally malevolent gaggle of greedy relations in her famous half hour Twilight Zone, The Masks. The result is slyly off-the-wall black comedy in prim and proper Victorian dress. The somewhat odd child, all unknowing, eagerly skips around in response to disembodied voices and blithely sneaks out to visit her best friend in his grave. Meanwhile, Lupino's camera, seemingly in collusion with the ghost, takes enormous pleasure in underscoring. playing with and reversing the murderous energy of the child's evil kinfolk. (RS)
