WITHOUT MEMORY

Without Memory is a melancholy document of three years in the life of Sekine Hiroshi, diagnosed with Wernicke's Kosakoff Syndrome, a minute but profound damage to the brain which prevents him from accumulating new memories. While hospitalised for a stomach operation in 1992, Hiroshi was deprived of vitamins for over a month due to medical incompetence. As a result, Hiroshi is trapped in a present that forever slips away.

Kore-eda Hirokazu's debut, Maborosi (MIFF 1996) was selected by more than 20 film festivals worldwide. Without Memory is his eighth documentary film.
