Andrew Kotting's Jaunt is a documentary on a fast topological trip along the River Thames. Along the way an engaging cast of characters offer us informative morsels about their famous waterway. From Southend-on-Sea to the Houses of Parliament in London, the linear narrative corresponds with the theme of a floating passage upriver, the pixillation a formal visual metaphor echoing the title's suggestion of a scurrying reconnaissance of a big and busy city. The sounds of the river are beautifully synchronised with the voice-over and imagery. Kotting is a maverick English filmmaker with a keen nose for sniffing out the glib humour in the characters and objects that grace one of the worlds most well know and iconic rivers, forging a portrait that is simultaneously familiar and strangely exotic.
