RAIN

A beautiful, provocative and moving debut feature from New Zealand director, Christine Jeffs. Rain tells the story of Janey (Alicia Fulford-Wierzbtcki), and her journey towards adulthood. It's the summer of 1972 as 13-year-old Janey is awakening to the newly found power of her blossoming sexuality, and the possibilities of adulthood. Her mother Kate (Sarah Peirse), dissatisfied with her marriage, feels life is passing her by. When an itinerant photographer (Marton Csokas), joins the holiday community where Janey and her family have settled for another perfect seaside holiday, he brings with him an air of change. Whilst at night, her parents have parties where their adult friends drink, dance and flirt, Janey becomes increasingly aware of the cracks in her parent's marriage. As she watches her mother begin an affair with the photographer, she starts to discover the power of her own sexuality. Soon, she is confronted with the terrible realisation that in a moment, everything can change forever. With an original score by Neil Finn, Rain recently screened as part of the Director's Fortnight, Cannes 2001
