Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) is a dissatisfied grocery store worker, desperate to escape her humdrum existence. On Christmas Day she wakes to discover her boyfriend has killed himself and on a nearby computer screen, the flashing words 'Read this' reveal themselves to be a link to his suicide note and an unpublished novel. Finding some money, Morvern flees to Spain with her friend Lanna intent on wiping out the Scottish gloom with a holiday replete with sex, drugs and a trek in the desert. Taking her dead lover's manuscript, and passing it off as her own, Morvern's future looks a whole lot brighter as editors flock to publish her 'masterpiece'. With a compendium tape of music by Stereolab and The Velvet Underground made by her late boyfriend, the soundtrack to Morvern's life is as hypnotic as this multi-award winning film experience that is based on Alan Warner's cult novel.
