Joe Gibbons, as a whacked-out therapist, attempts to integrate the various personalities of that much loved and reviled doll in this Pixelvison psychodrama. Barbie is positioned under the examining lens, inflated to human scale. Gibbons' performance, like his previous collaboration with Emily Breer on the hilarious The Phony Trilogy (1997), uses a direct comic sensibility to expose the hopes and inadequacies of consumerist health practice. Hack prescription drug salesman, he reminds Barbie that therapy is free while the camera is switched on. A wicked counterpoint to Todd Haynes' Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987).
