FOR LOVE'S SAKE (2012) [feature]

Japan (MIFF 2012 , Accent on Asia)
Director: Takashi Miike

“Takashi Miike['s]... deliriously daft romantic epic unfolds with a mixture of dynamic gang rumbles, sadistic slapstick violence and showstopping high camp musical numbers that would not seem out of place at a Eurovision gathering.” - Screen Daily

After many years, high school student Ai reconnects with bad boy Makoto, to whom she gave a scar when they were both children. Feeling responsible for his turn toward crime, she dedicates herself to rehabilitating him but Makoto is in much deeper than Ai thinks.

Inspired by the legendary 1973 anime The Legend of Love and Sincerity, Japanese cult icon Takashi Miike (Ace Attorney, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, both in this year's program; 13 Assassins, MIFF 11) drags the original chaotically, exuberantly into the live-action world, turning a story of thwarted teenage love into a typically insane detonation of black humour, over-the-top fight scenes, outrageous violence and Glee-gone-wrong musical numbers.
