On 3 January 1889, Friedrich Nietzsche witnessed the whipping of a horse in the Italian city of Turin. Moved to pity, the philosopher famously threw his arms around the animal's neck, refusing to move. Nietzsche's subsequent story has been told by history; this is the equine's tale.
Six days in the life of a horse and its owner are recounted in this visually extraordinary feature from Béla Tarr. Elegantly shot in monochrome, and consisting of just 30 long takes, this depiction of peasant life is accompanied by the striking score by Tarr's regular collaborator Mihály Vig.
Winner of the Silver Bear at this year's Berlin International Film Festival, The Turin Horse has been announced to be the director's final film.
