In 1915, French sculptor Camille Claudel had been confined against her will in a mental institution for two years. Insisting she is sane and yet beset by paranoia about her supposed persecutors, including former lover Auguste Rodin, Claudel struggles to find meaning - as an artist prevented from practising her art, and in the cloistered world around her.
Beginning where Bruno Nuytten's 1988 film left off, and based on medical notes and letters between Claudel and her brother, Camille Claudel 1915 is directed with sparse visuals and scoring by auteur Bruno Dumont (Outside Satan, MIFF 2011). Starring a mesmerising Juliette Binoche alongside non-professional actors, it offers the deeply challenging story of a talented artist who would spend three decades institutionalised.
