Many MIFF-goers will be familiar with the work of Hong Sang-soo (most recently with In Another Country, MIFF 2012, and The Day He Arrives, MIFF 2011), and this latest effort is perhaps his most stripped-back yet.
Feeling deserted by her mother and stuck in a thankless affair with her professor, film student Haewon (Jeong Eun-chae) seeks solace in daydreams. Hong demonstrates the frustrations of a clandestine relationship with a focus on dialogue - the couple walk, fight and cry as they move through their town, from an historic fort to a restaurant where their cover is blown after chancing upon Haewon's classmates. A sympathetic, intimate contemplation, this is a film that doesn't allow itself to be overrun with sentiment or melodrama.
