A luminous coda inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Viola weaves a kaleidoscopic web of lustful yearning as it follows the exploits of its title character and her boyfriend, and an all-woman acting troupe staging a play that riffs on the works of the Bard. As the interactions between these characters spin in and out of labyrinthine, Shakespearean-style farce and intrigue, the line between scene and mise en abyme, between life and literature, is blurred, until the film unspools into its exhilaratingly playful conclusion.

Director Matías Piñeiro (They All Lie, MIFF 2010) has built a reputation as one of modern Argentine cinema's most distinctive filmmakers, and his DNA is immediately recognisable in Viola.
