"Maidan will … stand as compelling witness and a model response to a seminal moment too fresh to be fully processed." – Variety

In November 2013, Ukraine's government turned its back on a deal with the European Union, triggering a wave of demonstrations that culminated in the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych, conflict with Russia and the involvement of the world's superpowers.

As the fallout from these events continues, celebrated filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (In the Fog, MIFF 2012; My Joy, MIFF 2010) presents what can only be described as a film of the moment: a first-hand documentary portrait of a popular uprising. Shot in Kiev's Independence Square from December 2013 to February 2014 and presented without commentary or interview, Maidan is both a tribute to the act of resistance and a vital document of our times.

"Harkens back to the heroic, journalistic roots of documentary-making and yet feels ineffably modern and formally daring." – Hollywood Reporter
