Silva's hallucinogenic fable follows an obnoxious American tourist and a self-styled hippie princess on an off-kilter drug trip through Chile.

In his second collaboration with Sebastián Silva, Michael Cera once again shakes off his mild-mannered geek image to play a young American in Chile, on a quest with two locals (played by Silva's own brothers) to locate a mythical cactus whose psychotropic juice possesses mind-bending properties. Their journey crosses paths with tripped-out flower child Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffman), another clueless gringo who tags along as the gang heads toward a spiritual revelation of sorts.

Filmed during a production hiatus from Silva's Magic Magic, Crystal Fairy has a loose, improvisational charm and goofiness laced with the director's familiar dark humour, while finding unusual humanity in characters that might otherwise have been marks for easy ridicule.
