"An outrageously unconventional and deliriously profane biopic … this irreverent, yet meticulously researched passion project should catch even cinephiles by surprise." – Variety

In Eisenstein in Guanajuato, legendary director Peter Greenaway turns his vaunted cinematic eye toward his own cinematic idol – the great Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein – and delivers yet another inventive, entrancing and occasionally eye-opening assault on cinematic form and propriety.

It's 1931 and Eisenstein, having failed in his bid to break into Hollywood, drives to Mexico to shoot a new epic, the never finished masterwork ¡Que viva Mexico!. However, shooting in such a foreign land comes with its own perils and distractions, and for the homosexual Eisenstein, a virgin at 33, the carnal lures of the place come bearing their own destructive force.

Lush, dangerous, provocative, explicit: Eisenstein in Guanajuato shows Greenaway at his most ambitious and confronting, proving that even at 72 the fabled auteur has plenty to offer the world of art cinema.
