One of the great auteurs of French cinema, Philippe Garrel (Jealousy, MIFF 2014) returns from this year's Cannes Director's Fortnight with his latest examination of the vagaries of modern relationships, co-written with legendary screenwriter and frequent Buñuel collaborator Jean-Claude Carrière, who helps imbue the story with additional piquancy.
Shot on Garrel's beloved 35mm anamorphic widescreen and narrated by his actor son Louis, In the Shadow of Women uses its central affair – between a long-married filmmaker and his long-time filmmaking partner – as a springboard to ruminate on the politics of sex, life and cinema, with the mastery of a filmmaker at the top of his game.
