MIFF 2015 film The Look of Silence is Oscar-nominated director and MacArthur fellow Joshua Oppenheimer's powerful follow-up to The Act of Killing (MIFF 2013). Join John Safran as he talks to Oppenheimer and, via Skype, the film's subject, Adi Rukun.

 

 

Joshua Oppenheimer is an American filmmaker based in Denmark. He came to filmmaking through his Harvard undergrad years, directing The Entire of the Louisiana Purchase in 1998, and These Places We've Learned to Call Home, which saw him infiltrate militia groups. He has made numerous short and features works, including the much-lauded The Act of Killing (MIFF 2013), which was was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards, and won the BAFTA for Best Documentary the same year. His new documentary, The Look of Silence, is a companion piece to The Act of Killing, and is already a multi-award-winner since its world Premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2014.

John Safran is an award-winning documentary maker of provocative and hilarious takes on race, the media, religion and other issues. John first hit TV screens in 1997 on ABC TV's Race Around the World. Both John Safran’s Music Jamboree and John Safran vs. God won Australian Film Industry awards for Best Comedy Series and Most Original Concept, and were also nominated for Logie Awards. His other shows include John Safran’s Race Relations and Speaking in Tongues. John currently co-hosts Sunday Night Safran, a radio talk show on Triple J with cranky but beloved Catholic priest, Father Bob Maguire. John’s first book, Murder In Mississippi – the true story of how he met a white supremacist, befriended his black killer and wrote a book – is currently out through Penguin and was named iBooks 2013 Best Non-Fiction.
