Since the birth of the talkies, musical accompaniment has played an integral role within film, with the best music emphasising the drama onscreen, intensifying their impact, and staying with us long after the credits. Zak Hepburn discusses influential scores and soundtracks, and the process of their creation with David Hirschfelder, Cornel Wilczek and Kier-La Janisse.

Cornel Wilczek is an Australian award-winning screen composer and music producer. He is driven by experimentation and the desire to find something new in music. His feature film work includes Cut Snake, These Final Hours (Best Score at Festival International Du Film Fantastique de Gérardmer), The Mule and Academy Award winner, Eva Orner’s documentary Chasing Asylum. His TV work includes Glitch (AACTA Award for best music score in television) and the international award winning children’s show Nowhere Boys. Cornel runs and owns Electric Dreams Studio in South Melbourne. It is a high-end, acoustically designed space that facilitates creative development, broadcast composition and mixing, surround for TV and film, as well as album production.

David Hirschfelder is an Australian musician, film score composer and performer from Ballarat. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards for his composing work, done on both Shine (1996) and Elizabeth (1998), and won two BAFTAs for Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Elizabeth. He has been a member of the John Farnham band, as well as composing for other films, including Sliding Doors (1998) and Australia (2008).
