Forget The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel; India's new must-visit accommodation for the elderly is Hotel Salvation. Take a visit in this award-winning debut.

Inspired by true tales from establishments in India's holy city – and earning comparisons to the odd couple pairing and existential contemplations of Alexander Payne's Nebraska – first-time feature writer/director Shubhashish Bhutiani explores life and death with clear eyes and gentle humour.

After dreaming of his own demise, 77-year-old Dayanand Kumar demands to spend his remaining days in the titular Varanasi guesthouse next to the Ganges. His son, Rajiv (Adil Hussain, MIFF 2015's Sunrise), is forced to accompany him on this final pilgrimage, with both men learning not just to reconnect, but to embrace everything that the experience throws their way.

Winner of the 2016 Venice International Film Festival Unesco Award for peace and human rights.
