ONE DAY

Winning the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week, first-time Hungarian filmmaker Zsófia Szilágyi examines a physically and emotionally exhausting day in the life of an overworked mother in this tense domestic thriller.

With three children to raise, a part-time job as an Italian teacher and the family’s money worries weighing on her mind, Anna’s (Zsofia Szamosi) existence is dictated by the needs of others. Indeed, moments alone are as rare as hearing the words "thank you". Then, amidst her hectic routine, she discovers that her husband has been unfaithful – not that the endless cycle of feeding, ferrying, classes and chores leaves Anna with any time to process the revelation.

Fresh from working as an assistant on On Body and Soul (MIFF 2017), Szilágyi uses every filmmaking tool in her arsenal to convey Anna’s relentless stress, from frantic handheld camerawork, to an immersive soundscape filled with the demands of daily life, to Szamosi’s unshakeable performance.
