When the US dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, almost every living thing was destroyed … except for a 400-year-old Japanese White Pine bonsai.

Adapting David Haskell’s book The Song of Trees – and particularly inspired by the line “to listen to trees, nature’s great connectors, is to learn how to inhabit the relationship that gives life its source, substance, and beauty” – Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee and Adam Loften craft a beautiful VR experience that explores memory and history.

Framed through the rings of the pine’s trunk, The Atomic Tree tells the interconnected stories of Japan’s ancient forests, its Buddhist temples and the Yamaki family home just outside Hiroshima, where the tree’s journey began.

“This story couldn't be told in any other medium but VR.” – Engadget
