Pastel coordinates, perfect hair, soccer practice, golf carts… the suburbs are as horrifying as you suspect. 

Sitcom Stepford wives Lisa Wetbottom and Jill Davies have Ken-doll husbands, cherubic kids, nice houses … and therefore ideal lives. So, when Lisa notices that Jill has a new baby daughter, Jill cheerily gifts the baby to her best friend. You see, it’s the neighbourly thing to do.

In the tradition of Lynch, Waters and Tim & Eric, directors and leads Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe create a suburban grotesquerie of manners that will make audiences cackle and cringe. As alumna of legendary Chicago improv troupe Upright Citizens Brigade, they bring Lisa and Jill’s dead eyes to life as their façade warps and cracks. They’re ably backed by Saturday Night Live’s Beck Bennett and Neil Casey as their witless husbands, and a scene-stealing turn from The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden as homeroom teacher Miss Human.

With soft-focus aesthetics, neck-snapping plot twists, and a gleeful surrealist streak, Greener Grass (an expansion of the MIFF 2016 short film of the same name) is an absurdly weird treat for Night Shift fans.
