Winner of multiple awards from Berlin and Busan to Tribeca and beyond, House of Hummingbird is the debut feature from one of South Korea’s most celebrated new directors.

“Among all the people you know, how many really understand what’s going on inside you?” Eun-hee is 14 years old and adrift. The year is 1994 and South Korea is going through a period of upheaval, renewal and disaster. Mirroring the nation’s mood, Eun-hee begins to explore who she is and who she truly wants to be, while struggling with her dysfunctional family and the swinging moods of friends, and embarking on romances with both male and female classmates.

Director Bora Kim has built her reputation on acclaimed short films focusing on young women and girls figuring out their places within wider South Korean society and testing those boundaries. House of Hummingbird sees her take these concerns to stunning heights in her first feature, a gentle, deft story of empowerment that grows in strength alongside its heroine. Picking up the Best International Narrative Feature, Actress and Cinematography Awards at year’s Tribeca Film Festival as well as the Berlinale’s Generation 14+ Grand Prix, House of Hummingbird is a delightful cinematic experience.

“A warm, complex and hopeful slice of teen life … sensitive, keenly observed and unflinchingly honest.” – Hollywood Reporter
