Ahead of the release of her new book, expanding the concepts explored in the ground-breaking The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis, film theorist Barbara Creed will discuss a range of contemporary films and television shows.
She will also discuss this year’s MIFF films, and how they grapple with real, imagined and symbolic horror in our post #MeToo world.
Barbara’s lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A.
Moderated by Annette BlonskiProf Barbara Creed is an academic, writer and film critic. She is author of six books on feminist film theory, gender & horror including the classic The Monstrous Feminine: film, feminism, psychoanalysis (1993). Her current research is on human rights and animal ethics. Her most recent book is Stray: human-animal ethics in the Anthropocene (2017). She is currently working on a new book on the monstrous-feminine, film and revolt. She has been on the boards of MIFF the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Writers Week and the Advisory Committee of the VCA School of Film & Television as well as being a film critic for The Age, ABC radio, the Australian Book Review and The Big Issue. Barbara is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at the University of Melbourne.
Annette Blonski is a freelance script editor and consultant on award-winning feature films, shorts and documentaries. She has written extensively on Australian and women’s cinema and, in 1999, won the WIFT Lottie Lyell Award for Outstanding Contribution to Screen Culture. Alongside her work in screen production she was deputy chair of MIFF, chaired the Industry Advisory Committee of RMIT’s Associate Diploma of Professional Screenwriting and for 10 years was the chair of Swinburne and then VCA School of Film and Television’s Industry Advisory Committee. She was a founding member of the board of ACMI and of the Natalie Miller Fellowship (NMF).
