In commemoration of the late Toni Morrison, MIFF is proud to screen this candid new biodoc from award-winning filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, direct from this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

She’s a Nobel laureate, a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her books are taught in high schools around the world, and have been adapted into Oscar-nominated movies. But as a black woman in American, author Toni Morrison faced more struggles than most to have her voice heard.

Documentarian Timothy Greenfield-Sanders was a friend of and collaborator with Morrison for over four decades, and in Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am he lets the beloved novelist tell her story her way – her pieces to camera beautifully proving her innate gift for storytelling. Greenfield-Sanders also gathers admirers, peers and colleagues including Oprah Winfrey, authors Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz and Hilton Als, poet Sonia Sanchez and more to reflect on her legacy.

“Moving and profound. Look for this one the front and center come Oscar time.” – Los Angeles Times

A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales for Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
