With a sly wink to Jacques Rivette’s 1974 film Celine and Julie Go Boating, the French collective Les Insoumuses (roughly, ‘Disobedient Muses’) – comprised of filmmakers and performers Carole Roussopoulos, Delphine Seyrig, Iona Wieder and Nadja Ringart – tackle the casual sexism of the French media in Maso and Miso Go Boating (1976). They take playful aim at the ‘Year of the Woman’ episode of a popular television program hosted by Bernard Pivot, in which he asks goading questions of the Secretary of State for Women, Françoise Giroud. The collective use an irreverent sense of humour and editing techniques to provocatively interrupt the misogynistic broadcast.
