Deux fois

Often described as the most notable work made by the feminist-funded radical French film collective Zanzibar Group (which also included Philippe Garrel), Jackie Raynal’s Deux fois (1968) is a wild, experimental provocation. Before Raynal became the programmer of two famous New York art-house theatres (Carnegie Hall and the Bleecker Street Cinema), she made this pioneering work in a single week in Barcelona. With sparse but incendiary dialogue – “tonight will be the end of meaning” – this black-and-white film features the charismatic director herself in an assemblage of unconnected, often-repeating scenes.
