Fuyuko is a professional proofreader, a solitary person of quiet routines. She rarely leaves the house, but loves taking walks late at night, when only “half the world remains”. One evening, she meets Mitsutsuka, a soft-spoken physics lecturer who’s just as reticent and fastidious as she is. Soon, they start taking walks together, sitting in cafés and talking the night away – two lonely satellites briefly, tenderly brought into shared orbit. But can their relationship survive the cold light of day?

Adapting the book of the same name by Mieko Kawakami (author of the hit novel Breasts and Eggs), Yukiko Sode takes on a gentle, beautiful story grounded in interior experience, delicately hinting at the difficulty of connecting with others – and the preciousness of the rare moments when it occurs. Starring prolific big- and small-screen Japanese actors Yukino Kishii and Tadanobu Asano (here taking on a relatively subdued role), this lovely two-hander is a film that dwells on conversation and the spaces lurking between the words we say to one another.
