Local authorities close in on a rural Georgian doctor, leaving her with nowhere to run.
Nina is a licensed obstetrician with an illegal side gig: administering black-market abortions to disadvantaged women in the villages of Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains, which she performs in between anonymous roadside sexual encounters with men. When she is accused of negligence in her hospital day job after delivering a stillborn child, the ensuing investigation puts Nina’s life under the microscope, and her career and safety at risk.
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Venice, as well as Best Film and Best Performance at the 2024 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the second feature from ascendant auteur Dea Kulumbegashvili (Beginning, MIFF 2021) has added an impressive array of accolades to its critically lauded appearances at major international festivals. Produced by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, MIFF 2017) and featuring a score by Matthew Herbert, April draws viewers deep into its disturbing nocturnal world through every meticulous frame.
