Ella and her daughters Jessie and Melli have booked a trip to Tenerife to take a break from their busy life in Berlin. The night before they’re due to depart, Jessie and her boyfriend Lux head out to a party, where a cocktail of alcohol and drugs leads to tragedy. One year on, the thwarted trip to the Canary Islands is reattempted, but the heartache continues to reverberate beneath seemingly healed exteriors.
The third feature from Sandra Wollner eschews the oversimplification that often accompanies the trope of unexpected death, elegantly playing with time and perspective to shed new light on events. The film’s pensive, precise images – shot by Aftersun (MIFF 2022) DOP Gregory Oke – likewise command attention as they distil grief, guilt and their after-effects. Birgit Minichmayr (Everyone Else, MIFF 2016) is arresting as a bereaved mother whose performance of survival hinders her recovery, while newcomer Lotte Shirin Keiling impresses in embodying Melli’s wide-eyed, almost magical approach to coping with unthinkable loss.
