World-premiering at MIFF, this cinematic work explores the future of wildfires and the possibilities of immersive cinema.
As the world faces a probable super El Niño event in 2026/27, with wildfire conditions that may exceed those of 2019/20, picturing these unprecedented fires defies imagination. Using the latest scientific data, a custom machine-learning model and the Unreal Engine 3D-creation platform, Firestorm allows audiences to visualise historical Australian bushfires and then interactively adjust weather conditions to see how they would dramatically change under escalating global warming scenarios. Presented at the VCA, University of Melbourne, in a world-first conversion of an LED volume into a stereoscopic cinema, Firestorm fully immerses audiences in a panoramic fire landscape, allowing them to viscerally experience the look and feel of these possible futures firsthand.
