David Wain has been wrangling retro comedy tropes since his 2001 debut, the cult-hit summer camp parody Wet Hot American Summer. He’s spoofed rom-com clichés (They Came Together) and lampooned the founder of National Lampoon magazine (A Futile and Stupid Gesture). For over a decade, Wain worked mainly in TV, until he popped up at Sundance 2026 to ruin the festival’s gravitas with this absolutely gag-stuffed, star-studded Tinseltown romp shot entirely on location. Behind the curtain of its determined silliness is an affectionate, surprisingly wholesome ode to a city that runs on desire.
